A LACK IN FLEXIBILITY

Baseball is an old, complicated game that isn't
as intuitive as contact sports, so fans are lacking immediate understanding of the game.

TARGET AUDIENCE

All Stadium Attendees

While ideally targeting the audiences who don't have a clue about the sport, we wanted our experience to be suitable for even the most dedicated fans

Fans shouldn't be discouraged to engage for being a certain "type" of fan

BENCHMARKING

We tested 76 people's understanding of the game to find knowledge gaps

People didn't know how the game works when it goes off script

Stakeholders Map

Our experience should be branded in alignment with the Park, most importantly to drive attendance retention

Persona Map

All fans have a desire for a novel experience, not just novices

RESEARCH INSIGHTS

Lack of interest in the sport stems from information being too dense and disconnected

Fans don't know where to look for information or what they mean. They also don't know when the team is doing well unless huge plays are made that stir crowd reaction.

HOW MIGHT WE

design a system of stadium experiences that invites game-goers of all levels to feel invested in the sport and Mariners culture in the context of teaching basics

MOODBOARD

Modernized, Focused, Bold, Immersive

Early Concepts

A walk-through experience was too choreographed and informational

Final Concept & Refinement

Reintroduced gamification, varied levels of engagement, and opened up the space

Form Iteration

Developing a consistent form language at varying levels of scale,
consistent with stadium environment and Seattle Mariners Branding

Get a grip station

Learning starts with a pitch! Look through the different types of pitches and what they can do.

Learning different pitch grips helps reinforce how pitches change the game’s outcome.

Visitors can place their hands on the ball over the grip markings to feel each pitch.

Spinning Out station

Spin a baseball on an apparatus to get a sense of how fast pitches are thrown!

Take it with you

For those who don't linger in the concourse... we have a pamphlet!

Follow the scoreboard, the field, and the at-bat; and understand the context of that night's matchup and pitcher
