What would a wellness device for the fitness industry look like?

Mind body wellness suggests that the mind and body are intertwined and constantly influencing each other.

The Goal

support this feedback loop of shaping a sustainable fitness mentality that fuels healthy exercise habits, which in turn improves mental states.

The problem

Current fitness culture shapes an unhealthy mindset where fitness is about improving appearances and finding hacks to quickly obtain results.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Young adults are most affected

Being new to the gym, body-conscious, and misinformed by social media are factors that make this group experience short-lived fitness journeys.

Secondary Research

  1. Retention rates are much lower when there isn't external guidance and accountability

PubMed Central Study 2021 Social Media x Misinformation on Exercise & Health

  1. Sprains and strains are the most common gym injury and severely slow down fitness progress

FOCUS AREA

Focus on bridging the knowledge gap to curate healthy execution and habit-building

user journey map

The key to fitness success is shifting the mindset from aesthetics to funtionality

Users need

affirmation from measured progress to facilitate long-term habits, however they lack the information and guidance to track and evaluate themselves amidst misinformation.

HOW MIGHT WE

design a workout training device that reframes user’s appearance-oriented goals to performance-oriented ones through evaluations and recommendations

DESIGN CRITERIA

CONCEPT 01 Muscle Sensors

A patch that uses muscle engagement data to track and determine physical progress.

CONCEPT 02 Recovery SCanner

A cool down machine that guides users through calming stretches while detecting potential strains

Final Concept & Refinement

Wearable muscle-tracking device with integrated systems

sEMG Sensor
Dispenser
UI System

Sensor Ideation

Pivoted frequently to ensure premium-feel, commercial context, comfort, and all body types were accounted-for

Disposable Stickers

Lacks premium quality

Adhesive Silicone

Unsuitable for sensitive skin

Wearable sensors

Unsuitable for commercial setting

Adjustable Band

Unable to reach all muscle groups

Silicone Suction Patch (+ band)

Hub Ideation

Purpose and visibility within gym environment fluctuated through size and location

Cleaning + Dispensing

Size too obstructive

Desk Center

Size too unnoticeable

STanding Kiosk

Unsuitable for commercial setting

Wall-Mounted Dispenser

Doesn't serve entire system

Wall-Mounted Hub Station

Form Development: The Sensor

We moved away from clean geometric forms to create a distinct athletic product

Form Development: The Band

As an accessory, a simpler construction best suited its function

Form Development: The Hub

Balanced each station's proportions, while optimizing user flow

Myosense

A system of products

The system consists of a sensor that detects muscle activation, a hub that houses all the devices, and an app that synthesizes and tracks all data

System Diagram

The Sensor

Using electromyography, the sensor can detect how much a muscle is activating to guide movement

The Sensor

Lights indicate successful connection and correlate to the type of muscle its sensing

Sensor Details

The grippy texture adheres to the skin with suction and body heat to minimize irritation and contact

Attachment

Sensors can be placed on all muscles directly or inserted into an adjustable band for added security on the arms and legs

The Hub

All sensors and bands are stored securely for gym managers to collect and maintain at the end of the day

Indicators direct interaction for receiving or returning

The APP

3 alerts provide biofeedback for form correction, injury prevention, and progress reassurance

Thank You~
